Manila, Philippines – October 7, 2025 – The Philippine Cancer Society (PCS) was proudly recognized as a partner-contributor to the study, "DISSECTING REAL WORLD DATA FROM PHILIPPINE PUBLIC VS PRIVATE INSTITUTIONS IN CANCER CARE," presented at the PSMO Fellow Oral Research Forum held at the EDSA Shangri-La Hotel. The research was presented and discussed by Dr. Soledad L. Balete, Section Chair of the Medical Oncology, Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center, and head of the CSPMAP at DOH-JRMMC, and a Fellow of the Philippine Society of Medical Oncology (PSMO) and a Volunteer with the PCS.
This research aimed to provide a comparative glimpse into the differences between Philippine Public versus Private Institutions within a defined geographical catchment area, specifically four Metro Manila cities (Caloocan, Manila, Quezon, and Pasay), and the country as a whole. The primary focus was on cancer patient profiles and survival outcomes, demonstrating the utility of Real-World Data (RWD) research. Other contributing authors include Dr. Chita Matunog, Dr. Kenny Jun Demegillo, Dr. Jennifer Sandoval-Tan, Dr. Herdee Gloriane C. Luna, Dr. Maricar Sabeniano, Dr. Jan Aurelle Llevado, Dr. Gloria Cristal-Luna, and Dr. Corazon Ngelangel.
The study analyzed RWD housed at the MedCheck IT Center, covering the period of 2020-2024. Data for the public sector primarily came from the electronic Cancer Surveillance/Monitoring and Patient Assistance Program (eCSPMAP), while the private sector data was mainly sourced from Electronic Health Records (eHRs). The use of RWD from eHRs and hospital-based cancer registries (eHBCRs) is crucial for capturing patient profiles, treatment utilization, and outcomes in diverse clinical settings during regular patient care.
