Dr. Priscilla J. Tablan
The Philippine Cancer Society mourns the passing and celebrates the life of Dr. Priscilla J. Tablan, a pioneering figure in the country’s public health movement and a passionate advocate for tobacco control. A trailblazer in her field, Dr. Tablan served as the first director of the Lung Center of the Philippines and held key roles in the Philippine Cancer Society, including as a member of its Advisory Council and Chair of the Anti-Smoking Committee. Her leadership spanned decades, during which she championed numerous national policies and grassroots campaigns for a smoke-free Philippines.
Recognized globally, Dr. Tablan was the first Filipino to receive the WHO Gold Medal Award for her tireless efforts against tobacco use. She played a central role in shaping anti-smoking legislation, including the Anti-Smoking Bill, the Sin Tax Law, and the Graphic Health Warning Act. Her contributions also extended to international efforts, as she helped craft a regional Tobacco Control Program in the Pacific under the WHO. We celebrate a life of integrity, service, and impact. Dr. Tablan’s legacy will continue to inspire generations of public health advocates and Filipinos dedicated to cancer prevention and control.
