Mastectomy Not First Choice for Most Breast Cancer Patients

TUESDAY, Oct. 13 (HealthDay News) -- Contrary to common belief, most women diagnosed with breast cancer are not turning to mastectomy as their first choice for treatment but are first trying more conservative approaches, such as lumpectomy, a new survey has found.

Study may change breast cancer screening

HOUSTON, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- A U.S. study shows women with a specific gene mutation are diagnosed with breast cancer six years earlier than women of the previous generation.

University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center researchers say their findings could have an impact on how women at the

highest risk for the disease are counseled and even screened in the future.

Study Suggests Mastectomy Not Being Overused For Breast Cancer Treatment

With there being a concern that mastectomy is excessively used as a treatment for breast cancer, a survey of nearly 2,000 women indicates that breast-conserving surgery was attempted as the initial therapy for about 75 percent of those surveyed, according to a study in the October 14 issue of JAMA, a theme issue on surgical care.

Social Isolation Adversely Affects Breast Cancer

A socially isolated, stressful environment can speed up the growth of breast cancer, researchers studying the effects of stress in animal models reported Tuesday.


Social isolation can actually change the expression of genes important in the growth of mammary gland tumors, according to Dr. Suzanne D. Conzen, an associate professor of medicine at the University of Chicago and the study's lead author.
